Camogie team win the league
Our senior camogie team topped off their league campaign with an away win against St Peregrines last Thursday – a result which delivered the overall Senior 4 league title to them.
The match started at a quick pace with both teams working hard to get early scores. Peregrines scored the first point from play and put Clanns under pressure from the beginning. It was a physical encounter, but hard work and determination in the midfield area from Sinead O’ Sullivan and good forward play led to early scores for Clanns. The hosts responded with some skilful points from play and frees. Twenty minutes into the game, Clanns took great motivation from two goals in quick succession which came as a result of cross field play and teamwork originating in the back line. This lifted the attack and they pushed on to score further points from play and a third goal. While Peregrines continued to battle, the girls were comfortably ahead at half time.
In the second half the back line continued to be very strong with excellent marking evident, particularly from Mairead Connolly. The defence was secure under the high ball and Elaine McDonnell showed great confidence in goal. Puck outs were contested and won with consistent play in the half forward line by Marie Fenton, Lynn Dunne and Sarah Ryan. When it came, a Peregrines goal did not cause panic and only served to motivate Clanns all the more – who responded with three points without reply. A fine goal by Siobhan Joyce in the final minutes made sure of the victory.
The league campaign has been excellent for the girls who have continued to develop great team spirit and determination as they prepare for the forthcoming championship. A special word of thanks must go to the management team of Michael Egan and Conor Dodd who have shown great dedication throughout.
